About 20.2 million Americans work in them today. The pattern is consistent: scripted communication, data entry and retrieval, standard document processing and routine analysis — work that happens entirely on a screen with predictable inputs.

Telemarketers, data entry clerks and routine clerical roles have topped automation-risk research for a decade — what changed is that language models moved the risk from "someday, with custom software" to "now, with an off-the-shelf tool." The riskiest mix is routine + verbal: reading from a script, keying data between systems, preparing standard documents, answering predictable questions. If a task can be described in a prompt, it can increasingly be done by one.
Note what is not here: hands-on trades, bedside care, emergency response and most work that happens in unpredictable physical environments. That's the other end of the spectrum — see the safest jobs from AI, or the high-paying roles that combine safety with a six-figure track.

Two things compound: a high share of routine, rule-based tasks (the classic automation risk measured by Frey & Osborne) and a high share of language and information tasks that large language models now handle — drafting, summarizing, classifying, transcribing, looking things up. Jobs that are mostly screen work with predictable inputs score highest.
Not necessarily. A score of 80+ means most core tasks are automatable with current or near-term AI — which can mean fewer positions, restructured roles or falling wages rather than outright elimination. Headcount tends to shrink through slowed hiring before layoffs.
